BRADBURY BREAKER

About the Event

The Bradbury Breaker returns to Pownal, Maine on July 12th, inviting runners from across the region to challenge themselves in one of the most demanding races in the area. Nestled within Bradbury Mountain State Park’s rugged terrain, this event offers a unique blend of natural beauty and athletic rigor that has drawn participants back year after year.
As you lace up your shoes on race day, the crisp morning air will remind you why this trail is considered one of Maine's most cherished running routes. The park comes alive with early-morning light filtering through dense forest foliage, casting a soft glow over classic New England rock formations and winding single-track paths. This backdrop sets the stage for an immersive experience where every step connects runners to the rich history and vibrant community spirit that defines Bradbury Mountain.
Since its inception, the Bradbury Breaker has become not just a race but a testament to perseverance and camaraderie in Maine’s outdoor culture. Each year, around 160 dedicated athletes gather to tackle this challenging course while supporting local charities through their participation fees. The generous cutoff time of three hours ensures that beginners have an opportunity alongside seasoned trail runners, fostering an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels supported by the Trail Monster community cheering them on.
The Bradbury Breaker unfolds over a total distance of 9 miles, consisting of two laps around a single-track loop known for its steep climbs and technical terrain. Runners will traverse through the heart of Bradbury Mountain State Park, navigating rocky outcroppings and dense underbrush that make this course uniquely challenging. Aid stations are strategically placed to provide runners with hydration and encouragement at key points along the route.
Weather conditions in July can be unpredictable but generally offer temperate days with an average temperature around 23°C (73°F), feeling slightly cooler due to gentle winds averaging about 9 km/hour. With a UV index of Very High, it’s essential for participants to wear sunscreen and protective clothing. Rainfall typically amounts to only 3.8mm throughout the day, leaving trails hard and dry underfoot.
