Big Bears Backyard Ultra

The 6th edition of Big Bear’s Backyard Ultra returns to Žilina, Slovakia, on Friday, April 17, 2026. Following the unique "Backyard Ultra" format, this race has no set finish line; instead, participants must complete a 6.706 km loop every hour on the hour. The competition continues until only one runner remains to complete a final solo lap. Known for its mental and physical toll, the event attracts some of the most resilient ultra-runners in Central Europe, all vying to beat the standing record of 61 loops set during the previous edition.

Day and Night Loop Dynamics

The race alternates between two distinct routes to keep runners engaged and manage safety during late-night hours. The Day Loop is primarily a trail path located under the reservoir wall, featuring an elevation gain of approximately 30 meters. As the sun sets, the race transitions to the Night Loop, which utilizes a flat asphalt surface along the reservoir with a minimal elevation gain of 10 meters. This change in terrain requires runners to adapt their gait and equipment as the hours—and days—progress, adding a strategic layer to the endurance challenge.

Rules and Historical Performances

Adhering to official Backyard Ultra rules, any runner who fails to be in the starting corral when the bell rings for the next hour is disqualified. The event honors the "Assist"—the last runner to drop out—as they are the one who enables the winner to complete the final loop. The 2025 edition saw an incredible performance with Milan Hauer (CZE) reaching 61 loops and Patrik Hrotek (SVK) providing the assist at 60 loops.
