Bamburgh Castle Cycle Sportive 2027: A Majestic Ride Along the Northumberland Coast
Set against the backdrop of Bamburgh Castle, the Bamburgh Castle Cycle Sportive returns for its seventh year in spring 2027. This event offers cyclists a scenic journey along the rugged coastline and historic villages of North East England.
Three distinct routes cater to all levels of experience:
- 50km Route: Ideal for beginners or first-time sportive riders, this route is mostly flat with stunning views of Dunstanburgh Castle from Seahouses, Beadnell, and Embleton. Cyclists will enjoy a straightforward course that showcases the beauty of Northumberland’s seaside towns.
- 100km Route: The most popular choice among novice to experienced cyclists, this route takes riders through picturesque villages such as Seahouses, Embleton, Alnmouth, Warkworth, Amble, and Acklington. With an approximate elevation gain of 2,800 feet, it offers a mix of terrain that challenges while rewarding with breathtaking coastal scenery.
- 100 Mile Route: For those seeking a more ambitious adventure, this hilly circular route extends beyond the 100km ride to include inland sections through Alnwick and Eglingham. With an elevation gain of over 5,200 feet, it presents a significant challenge for intermediate to experienced cyclists.
Each participant will start and finish at Bamburgh’s Links Road car park (NE69 7AX), with live chip timing provided by Timing Up North ensuring accurate results throughout the day. Feed stations are strategically placed along longer routes, offering essential refreshments like drinks, pastries, cakes, chocolate, and sweets to keep riders fueled.
Registration is available on Saturday evening from 5pm to 7pm or Sunday morning starting at 6:30am. Cyclists can choose their start time between 7:00 am and 8:30 am, ensuring a relaxed pace for those who prefer an early departure. All participants must leave the venue by 8:30 am.
Upon completion of any route, finishers will receive commemorative wild deer merchandise, medals, snacks, and drinks to celebrate their achievement. An exclusive event t-shirt is also available for purchase at £14 when signing up.
To ensure safety on open roads, all cyclists must adhere strictly to the Highway Code and wear helmets throughout the ride. Parking is provided on-site for a fee of £4 per vehicle; however, car sharing or alternative modes of transport are encouraged due to limited space availability overnight parking isn’t permitted at the venue.
