The volcanic landscape of Mount Aso is vast and diverse, stretching over 18 kilometers from east to west and nearly 25 kilometers from north to south. The mountain's circumference measures approximately 128 kilometers, making it one of the largest volcanoes in the world. At its center lies a stunning caldera filled with verdant farmlands, bustling towns, and winding roads that connect three municipalities: Asosan City, Takamori Town, and Minami-Aso Village.
The race route winds through this expansive terrain, showcasing not only the natural beauty of Mount Aso but also the rich cultural heritage embedded in its history. Runners will traverse paths near the base of the mountain's five peaks—Takachihofuji (the highest peak), Kusasakeyama, Nakadake, Akakojimayama, and Karakujimayama—each offering breathtaking views and challenging ascents.

This ancient road was instrumental in connecting Kumamoto Castle to Hizen Province (now part of Ōita Prefecture) for the feudal lords' journey between their domains and Kyoto during alternate-year visits to the imperial court.
