Nestled within the heart of Kyushu, Japan, the Asakura Mountain Race invites runners to explore one of the country's most iconic landscapes. This race takes place on September 20, 2026, offering participants a unique opportunity to experience the majesty and history of Mount Aso. The volcanic landscape of Mount Aso is vast and diverse, stretching over 18 kilometers from east to west and nearly 25 kilometers from north to south. The mountain's circumference measures approximately 128 kilometers, making it one of the largest volcanoes in the world. At its center lies a stunning caldera filled with verdant farmlands, bustling towns, and winding roads that connect three municipalities: Asosan City, Takamori Town, and Minami-Aso Village. The race route winds through this expansive terrain, showcasing not only the natural beauty of Mount Aso but also the rich cultural heritage embedded in its history. Runners will traverse paths near the base of the mountain's five peaks—Takachihofuji (the highest peak), Kusasakeyama, Nakadake, Akakojimayama, and Karakujimayama—each offering breathtaking views and challenging ascents. One highlight of the race is its passage along parts of the Bungo Kaidō, a historic route from the Edo period. This ancient road was instrumental in connecting Kumamoto Castle to Hizen Province (now part of Ōita Prefecture) for the feudal lords' journey between their domains and Kyoto during alternate-year visits to the imperial court. The Asakura Mountain Race follows sections of this historical path, allowing runners to experience firsthand the rugged beauty that once posed significant challenges to travelers. The race not only celebrates the physical grandeur of Mount Aso but also honors its deep cultural significance as a symbol of Kumamoto Prefecture and Japan's volcanic heritage. Participants will enjoy an immersive journey through landscapes shaped by centuries of geological activity, encountering serene fields, ancient stone pathways, and vibrant communities that thrive within this unique environment. Join us on September 20, 2026, for the Asakura Mountain Race—a celebration of nature, history, and human endurance set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Mount Aso.
