The Area 51 Trail Race is a non-profit endurance event held at the Area 51 mountain bike trails in Hernando, Mississippi. Scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, the race is in its third year and serves as a benefit for the North Mississippi Trail Alliance (NMTA). All profits from the event are donated to the NMTA to support the continued building and maintenance of the local trail system.
Race Categories and ScheduleThe event features two distances that utilize the North Mississippi hill country. Bib pickup is available at the start/finish line on race morning, with a secondary pickup location typically announced a few days prior.
| Distance | Start Time | Course Type |
|---|---|---|
| 12K Trail Race | 8:00 AM | Full loop of North and South Voyager trails. |
| 6K Trail Race | 8:15 AM | Abbreviated loop with a shortcut between Voyager trails. |
The course is 100% single-track trail, winding through the dense woods and rolling hills of North Mississippi. The terrain is notably challenging for the region, featuring approximately 100 feet of elevation gain per mile. While the climbs are frequent, the trails remain runnable for experienced trail runners. In early May, the Hernando area typically sees spring conditions with average highs of 26°C and lows of 14°C. Runners should be prepared for variable trail conditions; while the paths are well-maintained, humidity can make the climbs feel more strenuous. The race distances are approximate, often referred to by the organizers as "ish" distances due to the nature of the winding single-track.
Logistics and AmenitiesThe start and finish lines are located at 8900 US-Highway 51. Parking is limited at the trailhead, so participants are strongly encouraged to carpool if possible. On-course support includes a dedicated water station for the 6K route and a full aid station for the 12K participants. Following the event, runners are invited to stay for a post-race breakfast and coffee. Registration closes at noon on Friday, May 8, 2026, and the event is timed with results typically posted shortly after completion.
