9/11 Memorial 5K Run~Walk and Kids Fun Run

On September 11, 2023, the Gorham community will come together to honor and remember those lost on September 11, 2001. The annual 9/11 Memorial 5K Run-Walk is a poignant tribute organized by Steve Ward's family from Gorham, Maine. In 2001, Steve was an ambitious young professional at Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center, embodying the promise and potential of America when he tragically lost his life.
This year marks the event’s 25th anniversary, a momentous occasion to reflect on the lives that were cut short. The race is not just about running; it's an emotional journey through memory lane as participants pay tribute to those who perished, including Steve and the 343 brave firefighters of FDNY.
Registration fees go directly towards funding the Stephen G. Ward Memorial Scholarship Fund, which has grown from its modest beginnings in 2011 to now awarding $3,500 annually to local high school graduates pursuing higher education. This event is a testament to community spirit and resilience.
Participants can also look forward to witnessing an inspiring display of dedication as uniformed first responders complete the course fully geared up, honoring their fallen comrades with unwavering commitment. The race begins at 9:15 AM after the Kids Fun Run concludes, featuring moving speeches and the playing of the National Anthem.
The event is held at Gorham Recreation Department on Ball Park Road in Gorham, Maine. Bib pickup for pre-registered participants will take place from September 12th to 14th between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM at the same location.
For those under eight years old, there’s a special Kids Fun Run starting at nearby Gorham High School track at 8:30 AM, where children will enjoy one lap around the track for younger kids or two laps for older ones.
Post-race refreshments and an awards ceremony follow once all runners have crossed the finish line. Prizes are awarded to first and second place male and female age group winners, providing a sense of camaraderie among participants while celebrating Steve's legacy.
Registration is now open with free commemorative t-shirts available for the first 100 registrants who sign up early. Join us in remembering those lost on September 11th and supporting future generations through education scholarships.
