The 5th Annual Lost Paws Memorial 5K and 1 Mile returns to Amarillo, Texas on July 11th. This running event offers both a challenging 5K for adult runners and a family-friendly 1 mile race.
Race morning finds the course starting at Shady Hollow Park, located just off Interstate 40 near downtown Amarillo. The park is surrounded by lush greenery with walking trails that wind through picturesque landscapes, offering a serene setting on race day. By early July, mornings can still be cool and comfortable, but as the sun rises, temperatures typically climb to around 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
This event has been running for five years now, firmly establishing itself in Amarillo’s calendar. Over the past four editions, more than 100 participants have taken part each year, raising funds for a local animal shelter that provides support and care for lost or abandoned pets. The race not only brings together runners but also strengthens the community's commitment to its furry friends.
The course is set on firm yet slightly soft trails within Shady Hollow Park. It features a mix of gentle slopes and flat stretches, making it accessible while still providing an engaging run. After completing their 5K timed portion, participants can enjoy immediate rest or continue onto the 1 mile race for additional fun. The event guarantees T-shirts to those who register by June 15th; race day entries are not accepted.
The weather on July mornings is typically hot with UV levels reaching Very High at an index of 8.0. Expect temperatures around 75 degrees Fahrenheit, rising gradually as the morning progresses into the mid-80s. The firm and slightly soft trail conditions can make running feel a bit more challenging due to potential unevenness.
