3M Bike Challenge

Experience the thrill of the 3M Challenge (Muscle vs. Machine vs. Mountain) on September 26, 2026. This unique race will pit human endurance against one of the world's largest operating steam locomotives and cyclists along a scenic route through Maryland’s Allegany County.
The event kicks off at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) Station in Cumberland, MD, with riders departing every five minutes from 9:00 AM. The race course follows the Great Allegheny Passage between Cumberland and Frostburg, featuring side-by-side bike trails and scenic train rides that showcase the region's natural beauty.
Cyclists will navigate a challenging route on RideWithGPS.com, competing to beat the WMSR 1309 Steam Locomotive. Over 40% of participants succeeded in outclimbing the historic locomotive last year. Winners receive recognition for their impressive feat.
Participants can expect an exhilarating journey through picturesque landscapes and charming small towns like Cumberland and Frostburg, MD. The route offers a mix of terrain that tests both physical strength and mental fortitude.
Teams ranging from two to six riders are welcome, but electronic bikes (e-bikes) are not permitted in the competitive categories. Each individual must donate $60 or a team $250 to Mountain Maryland Trails (MMT), which uses these funds for trail maintenance and improvements.
All participants will receive a commemorative Great Allegheny Passage 3M Race Shirt, with size requests required at registration. The event not only highlights the historic WMSR 1309 but also celebrates the broader mission of Mountain Maryland Trails to promote wellness, sustainable economic growth, environmental stewardship, and cultural heritage.
Since its inception over three decades ago, this volunteer organization has transformed a defunct rail line into one that attracts more than 1.5 million visitors annually, generating significant economic benefits for the region.
