33rd Anniversary Mogadishu Mile Remembrance & Walk

About the Event

On October 3, 2026, Downtown Dunedin will host its annual Mogadishu Mile Remembrance & Walk to honor the brave soldiers of Task Force Ranger and commemorate the events that unfolded on October 3-4, 1993. This poignant event marks the 33rd anniversary of Operation Gothic Serpent, a mission aimed at capturing Somali warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid but which turned into one of the most intense battles in recent U.S. military history.
The day begins with an early morning registration at H.O.B. Brewing Company on Huntly Avenue starting from 8:45 AM. Participants will gather for a reflective and respectful walk that covers exactly one mile, symbolizing the harrowing journey made by wounded Rangers under heavy fire to reach safety after their helicopter was shot down in Mogadishu.
This year’s event is more than just a physical activity; it serves as an emotional tribute to those who lost their lives during this critical mission. The walk will be followed by a catered brunch, where attendees can listen to decorated military speakers and meet special guests, including veterans and family members of the fallen soldiers. Each life that was lost will also receive a dedicated moment of recognition.
The story behind Operation Gothic Serpent is well-documented in Mark Bowden’s book "Blackhawk Down" and its subsequent film adaptation. On October 3, Task Force Ranger launched an operation to capture two lieutenants working for Aidid but faced unexpected resistance from militia forces equipped with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). This led to the downing of U.S. Blackhawk helicopters, turning a routine raid into a desperate rescue mission.
The next day, on October 4th, as relief units arrived at the crash site under intense fire, only those severely wounded could be transported by vehicle. The rest made their way back to safety over approximately one mile while still being targeted relentlessly. This challenging and dangerous route became known as "The Mogadishu Mile," a term that encapsulates both physical endurance and unwavering commitment.
Proceeds from the event will go directly towards supporting current and former Rangers, their families, and Operation Warrior Hope. By participating in this year’s Mogadishu Mile Remembrance & Walk, you not only pay tribute to those who served but also contribute to ongoing efforts that help service members transition back into civilian life.
Join us as we honor the legacy of Task Force Ranger and remember a pivotal moment in military history with dignity and respect.
