Emperor's Challenge invites runners to conquer Babcock Mountain, nestled within the stunning Tumbler Ridge UNESCO Global Geopark, on Saturday, August 8th. The half marathon route spans an exhilarating 20 kilometers with a challenging summit at kilometer 11, boasting an elevation gain of over 610 meters (2050 feet). For younger participants, the event offers two kid-friendly races: a 4-kilometer course and a more manageable 2-kilometer option.
Race registration closes on July 31st at midnight. Participants can collect their race packages either during Friday evening's pick-up session from 6pm to 8:30pm at Tumbler Ridge Community Centre, or early Saturday morning between 7am and 8:15am near the start line.
The race begins promptly at 9am with a scenic ascent through lush mountain terrain. The course is meticulously marked every kilometer in Roman numerals and features wooden stakes painted orange for easy navigation. Runners will encounter three water/first aid stations along their journey, located strategically to provide essential support: one just after the start line (km 2), another at km 8.5, and a final station near the summit (km 10.5).
Competitors must reach the first major checkpoint by noon; those failing to do so will be redirected down the mountain rather than continuing on the top loop. A second cut-off time of 1:30pm applies at km 14.5, after which participants are required to withdraw from the race and receive transportation off the course.
All adult finishers who complete their run within five hours will earn a commemorative medal upon crossing the finish line. Medals come in three tiers based on performance times: gold for under two hours, silver between 2:00pm and 3:00pm, and bronze from 3:00 to 5:00pm.
Race day begins at Core Lodge site, a picturesque start point accessible via a scenic drive through the mountains. The elevation here exceeds 4000 feet, making it imperative for runners to dress appropriately for high-altitude conditions. Post-race festivities include hot dogs and hamburgers served exclusively for racers and volunteers in the finish area.
