On October 18, 2026, the community of Armidale will come together to honor Anya Zuber's legacy through the '19 for 19 Challenge.' This poignant tribute celebrates Anya’s short but impactful life by raising funds and awareness for osteosarcoma research. Anya was diagnosed with high-grade metastatic osteosarcoma at just thirteen years old, a condition that led to six years of relentless treatment before her untimely passing on September 12th, 2020, at the age of nineteen. Her wish was for her experience and resources to contribute to ongoing research aimed at ending osteosarcoma and improving treatments. In collaboration with the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA), Anya's family established 'Anya’s Wish,' a groundbreaking project dedicated to enhancing therapies and survivability rates for young people diagnosed with this aggressive bone cancer. The event will take place on private property in New England, reflecting Anya’s love for nature and her fond memories of bush walks and picnics. Participants can choose between two courses: the full 19km course or a more family-friendly 7.5km route designed to accommodate young walkers eager to join the cause. Both routes offer breathtaking views of the region's natural beauty, providing an inspiring backdrop for this meaningful event. The entry fee includes a commemorative t-shirt and snacks on the day, while participants are encouraged to bring their own water bottles as the event is "cupless," aiming to minimize waste. The proceeds from the '19 for 19 Challenge' will support Anya’s Wish research project with the goal of raising $200,000. For those unable to attend in person, there are opportunities to undertake their own 19km challenge and contribute towards fundraising efforts under a special registration category. Every step taken on this day is not just a walk but a stride toward changing history for children battling osteosarcoma. This event promises an uplifting atmosphere filled with the spirit of community support and dedication, honoring Anya’s legacy while working to create a future where no child has to face such challenges alone.
